Welcome

This is the home of the So Licky Rattery (SLKY).  The place to get your loving and healthy pet rat in Kansas City.  We breed our rats for the purpose of bettering the rat as a species and as a pet.  This includes breeding for type, temperament, and health.  We strive to promote education of rat owners and the rat community as a whole.  All of our rats are loved and coddled from day one.  We feel that rats should be happy every day of their short lives.  They give us so much in return for our affections.  They chitter when we're happy and lick our tears when we're sad.  They deserve every ounce of love and attention that we can give them.

We have been registered with the North American Rat Registry (NARR).  Our official prefix is SLKY.  We are also members of RFL and try to breed our rats to the standards set before us by URS and RSA.

Russian Blues, Russian Silvers, and Blue Point Siamese

Right now we are only breeding and specializing in one line.  It has several intricacies to it, so here is an outline of what you can expect to see our of our breeding line:

  • The line we are working on right now will contain two colors.  Both Russian Blue and Russian Silver.  This should remain consistent over the years.  We would like to really perfect the Russian Silver, while still maintaining the Russian Blue part of the line for the Siamese gene.  A blue-point Siamese traditionally has darker points than a silver-point Siamese.  The only time we will have other colors is when we bring in an out cross that has other color dilutions in it.  When we bring in outcrosses we will try to keep it Blue, Silver, or Black.
  • Our line also carries the Satin gene.  We're going to work on getting this gene strongly incorporated into our line.  This may take a year or two, but you can expect to see more and more satin heads popping out.
  • Another complexity to our line is the Siamese gene.  We will be trying to incorporate and improve on that gene, while still maintaining a strong unmarked presence.  What this means is that most of our litters will be a mix of Siamese and Self babies.  This will help us to make sure our rats remain unmarked with white which will result in Siamese with strong points on their feet.  It may seem complex, but it boils down to a good Self rat equals a good Siamese rat.  It will also provide us with a nice variety.
